CONCERT: Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness - Zombies in America Tour

Belasco Theater
1050 Hill St, Los Angeles, CA 90015
Wed, May 3
6PM Doors

I got there around 5:30PM and got in line.
There wasn't a big line yet, I was pretty much at the southwest corner of the block.
(A pretty big improvement from the last time I was there haha!)

I went to the left side of the stage since that pretty much guarantees a view of his face while he plays piano.
I was one person away from the barrier but everyone was so tall!

Opening Acts

Night Riots

I was pretty freaking close to the front.
There was a girl in front of me who was really into dancing and I'm sure the band really noticed.
He pointed in our direction and I'm just standing there with my mouth in an open smile lmao.

This guy could sing.
He was pretty vampy and danced so much.

Definitely music that I'd listen to but I don't think the performance/style is my cup of tea.
Maybe a while back but not right now.
Kind of kinky/dark and yeah vampy, hahaha.

It's really nice to see people so happy and enthused to perform though.
That actually made me a little emotional at the start of their set, gosh.

But yeah, not bad.

Atlas Genius

I actually didn't realize that they were performing until I looked Andrew up on Twitter!
Very nice surprise.

Never knew what they looked like but it was really cool to see them.

They started the set with If So, which was awesome because that's probably my favorite song.
I only recognized maybe 2-3 other songs though, kind of sad.

They were really great though, I felt more into their set than Night Riots.
I mean, probably a given since I actually listened to them for a good bit but I hadn't heard the new stuff.

Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness

They entered from the right side(while the 2 other bands came from the left), I don't know why that's important to add but yeah.

I can't believe it's actually been almost exactly 4 years since I've seen him.
I actually recognize the kid in the middle, he was at the show 4 years ago, too!

I was ridiculously close.

I freaking love that he stands on the piano.

The visual was so nice.
It didn't change too much throughout, just the helmet and backgrounds but I think it was nicely done.
I liked the gold bulb lights across the ground too.

Pretty sure I just looked shocked as hell every time he came around.
The first thing I said to the girl next to me after the first time he came to our side was
He's so...good looking!
Cringey fangirl, I'm sorry

Synesthesia.
I loved this so much.
He talked about these parachutes from childhood and asked us to just close our eyes and dance.

I couldn't do that cause he just walked right up to me!
I wanted to make it my mission to high five him but he just leaned right over in front of me and reached his arms out to everyone.
So I just touched his arm!

Crazy.

It would have been so cool to be under the parachute.
He actually went under there  in the crowd at some point too!

There were some technical difficulties during La La Lie where both of his microphones went out.
It was pretty funny watching him pull confused faces and try to figure it out.
At some point he just threw one of the microphones off stage.

Apparently the power went out so he just had the rest of the band keep playing and they brought the duck back out for another run.
We just sang together while he went around again.

This is probably Cecelia and the Satellite.

I grabbed some confetti, too.

Bye, Andrew!

I will add the setlist when I find the time.

Overall, this show was so much fun.
I think more memorable than the first show of his that I went to.

He has such great energy and everyone just comes alive from that.
He actually crowd surfed a little bit at some point too!

I loved the props a lot.
The duck, the parachute, and the floaties they threw around.
I actually thought that the parachute was tarp at first because he was going to splash water or something, lmao.
The duck was really fun, I saw pictures of it before but it was really something to experience.
It's such a nice way to get closer to the audience.

Speaking of close to the audience, I'm pretty sure I made eye contact with all of the frontmen of each band!

Anyway.
I went by myself but it was still a really amazing show.
I think it'd probably be in my top experiences so far.
I didn't care about getting to the front too much but I just happened to be able to and that was really nice.

I didn't know a few songs off of the new albums but it was still a good feeling to watch them perform.
They did play old songs like Dark Blue, Swim, La La Lie, Woke Up in a Car.

Andrew is just incredible, a survivor.
I really liked what he said about leaving the worries out for a few hours and I really felt that I was able to do that.
And the feeling of people coming together for music is just magical.
